Gender performativity

The idea that gender isn’t something that we are, it is something that we do.  The term was coined by Judith Butler who has written extensively about gender performativity throughout their career but especially elaborated upon in their seminal work Gender Trouble. The idea of gender as pure performativity was critiqued by Julia Serano as being "gender artifactualist" and reductive of the complexity of gender.
